| Announcing... http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/321This will be released on April 23, 2010 and is the final set of the Zendikar block. However, this set will be a little different than traditional 3rd sets of a block: There will be 248 cards in the set, compared to 140-150 we have typically gotten before. Rise of the Eldrazi is part of Zendikar block, which means that it will be part of Zendikar Block Constructed. But it's a large set, which means that it will be drafted on its own; drafts will be either Zendikar-Zendikar-Worldwake or Rise of the Eldrazi-Rise of the Eldrazi-Rise of the Eldrazi. Prerelease Events will be held on April 17-18. Launch Parties (Release Events) will be held on April 23. Are you ready for the Eldrazi? | |

| Wonder whats up with having the extra amount of cards in a small set. Surely there must be a reason for it....any clues? | |

| I'm not sure. They've been tinkering with a block's card amount for a few years now. They did 2 mini blocks with Lorwyn and Morningtide, where each block was only two sets (a large one and a small one). Players (read: Pro's) complained that there was too large of a cardpool to keep up with. They went back to a more 'traditional' release in the Shards block, with a large set of 250 cards and two small sets of 145 cards. But then they decided to rotate core sets yearly beginning with M10 - which was the smallest core set to date with 250 cards. But note that it was expressed to consist of half 'new' cards and half reprints....
So in a little more than 3 years, players have had the smallest to the largest card pools ever.
I think they are trying to tweak out a balanced card pool, while also finding new ways to release additional products on an increased basis.....they are a business first.
However I am excited about this future set. Big blocks are usually very powerful here lately.
We may begin seeing 2 blocks a year, which is a good way for Wizards to increase their franchise and is a good way for R&D to release more mechanics than they usually can in a 1 year's time. | |
